Grace in the Glades: The Story of the Sri Lankan Spotted Deer

The Ultimate Alarm System

Spotted deer possess incredibly sharp senses, constantly scanning the mosaic landscapes of open grasslands and dense thickets. The moment a deer catches the faint scent of a predator or spots a suspicious silhouette, it lets out a sharp, bark-like alarm call.

The Jungle’s Telegraph: This high-pitched alarm doesn’t just warn fellow deer. When trees like the Palu (Manilkara hexandra) drop their sweet, ripe yellow fruits, or when Wood Apple and Tamarind pods fall to the earth, herds will gather beneath the canopies to feast on the nutrient-dense treats. They have even been observed foraging alongside troops of gray langurs, happily cleaning up the high-quality fruits and leaves the messy monkeys drop from the treetops.
